Short Biography

Andrea Tinnes (born 1969) is a Berlin-based typographer, type designer, and educator recognized for her design approach that combines visual research, language, and experimental printing, including the ‘Library of Shapes, Texts and Structures’, an ever-expanding personal design library.

Andrea received a degree in Communication Design from the University of Applied Sciences Mainz (1989–1996) and a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the California Institute of the Arts (1996–1999).

Following her studies at CalArts, she worked as a design assistant for Mr. Keedy in Los Angeles before moving to Berlin in 2000 to establish herself as an independent graphic and type designer. In 2004, she founded typecuts, a platform for publishing and showcasing all her typographic projects and typefaces.

With years of teaching experience, Andrea has taught at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway and was appointed Professor of Type and Typography at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in 2007. In 2010 she was appointed as a member of the Art Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Finance, judging the German stamp competitions. From 2010 to 2014, Andrea served as prorector at Burg Giebichenstein, overseeing the school’s communication and new visual identity.

In 2019, Andrea held her first solo exhibition at the Berlin Gallery A—Z presents, initiated by Anja Lutz and The Green Box. Her work has been featured in numerous national and international publications and exhibitions, earning her several awards, including four Certificates of Typographic Excellence.
